Jersey Boys ‘Frankie Valli’ Actor John Michael Dias Interview

Jersey Boys is currently playing at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, MO for almosr 3 weeks from May 11 to May 29.

Kevin Interviewed ‘Frankie Valli’ Actor John Michael Dias and posted in Review St. Louis. Read the complete Interview below:

Jersey Boys ‘Frankie Valli’ Actor John Michael Dias

Jersey Boys ‘Frankie Valli’ Actor John Michael Dias

Kevin: I read that you have been acting since you were 12. Is it something you immediately fell in love with, or did you ever have plans to do anything else?

John Michael Dias: Yes! My first show was Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” with my grandmother Francesca Petisca’s Community theatre “The Little theatre of fall River in MA. They are still an amazing community theatre churning out fantastic productions. I always knew I would be performing on some level. I did fall in love with the theatre right away. I love the joy that performing brings me and the potential live performance has to affect people.

Kevin: How does it feel to be a part of “Jersey Boys,” a show that has been so popular since it opened on Broadway and received the Tony for best musical in 2006?

John Michael Dias: It’s incredible. Speaking of affecting people… I have never been part of a show that consistently get’s this dramatic of a positive reaction from every audience. There’s nothing NOT to like!

Kevin: How did you get involved with “Jersey Boys” originally?

John Michael Dias: I auditioned 13 times over a period of 2 years. In 2004 Ron Melrose our music Director and arranger was playing audition piano for the show “We Will Rock You” They had no interest in me but Ron thought there was something there that might be good in Jersey Boys, So he stole my headshot/resume from the trash and I got a call for my first audition a few months later.

Kevin: You were a part of the first national tour, right? How much has the show changed and evolved since you started?

John Michael Dias: I was originally cast in the Chicago Company that started out with a 6 month sit down in SanFrancisco. We then stayed open in Chicago for 2 and a half years. Once that company closed, a position opened up for me out on the road in this touring company. The creative team tries their best to maintain the show and keep it as close to the original Broadway company’s splendor.

Kevin: Tell me a little bit about Frankie Valli in the show.

John Michael Dias: The show is about his story and the three other seasons Tommy Devito, Nick Massi, and Bob Gaudio and their rise to fame. It’s sort of a 2 1/2 hour Mtv behind the music episode. The show takes you from their early days all the way through present time. You get to see Frankie grow up, become a man and the icon he is today.

Kevin: You have been in a lot of different roles. Would you say that this one is more challenging than others, and how does it compare?

John Michael Dias: Nothing compares to this role. It’s been my most challenging and most rewarding part I have played thus far in my career and unless someone is writing a part for me right now that is harder… it might be the toughest role I will ever play. Frankie sings 27 hit songs and almost never leaves the stage for the entire show unless it’s to change costumes. It’s quite a ride.

Kevin: What is your favorite part of being involved in “Jersey Boys?”

John Michael Dias: I think I would have to say borrowing Frankie Valli’s star and affecting people are my favorite. The guys who play these real people every night can only imagine what it’s like to really be these men and accomplish what they have in their lives. As long as I keep that in mind and the audience that is celebrating this music and this extraordinary story, the audience reaction will always be my favorite thing.

Kevin: Have you ever been to St. Louis before? Played the Fabulous Fox Theatre?

John Michael Dias: No I haven’t! We had our sound check today in that Fabulous space and I am so excited to perform there! It is without a doubt one of the most fantastic theaters I have ever seen. I am so excited to explore this beautiful city and enjoy the weather!

Kevin: From your website, I saw that you have painted quite a bit. Is that something else that you do professionally, or is it a hobby? (I like the style, very cool)

John Michael Dias: Yes, thanks! I have taken to traveling with my paints to give me something to do in my off time. I mainly do portraits and really loud abstract stuff. It’s definitely a hobby but I have been paid to do a few pieces for different people.

Kevin: What do you like to do in your free time beside from acting, painting?

John Michael Dias: My grandmother who introduced me to theatre also introduced me to costume design and sewing, so I tend to make a lot of friend’s Halloween costumes as well as alter their clothes like hemming jeans and whatnot…. exciting huh?

Kevin: How long does the tour for “Jersey Boys” go, and what happens when it is over? Do you have any other projects in the works?

John Michael Dias: As long as the people want to watch this show we will be touring. I am working on my CD right now just to keep myself going and my creative juices flowing. I should be releasing a few tracks soon on my website Johnmichaeldias.com.

BWW’s Interview with Jersey Boys London’s New ‘Frankie’ Jon Lee

Jon Lee starring as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys London

Jon Lee starring as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys London

Jon Lee begins his starring role as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys next month Alternating with Ryan Molloy. Jon starred in four television series, a film and won two Brit awards and Record of The Year as part of the band, with record sales spanning over 13 million!

Here is the preview of the marvelous interview with Jon Lee by Jody Vodden.

Q. I bet it’s pretty hectic – how does it compare to the other roles you have played?

A. This role is for a year and because I am alternating with Ryan Molloy it means it doesn’t take up all of my time. I have the time to perform at the Savoy twice a month as well. When I was in Les Mis I was doing eight shows a week and it took up all of my time. Right now I have the best of both worlds, but I am still doing what I love.

Q. As your Jersey Boys debut draws closer how are you feeling?

A. My first night is the 18th March, which isn’t too far away now! It has come around so quick – I found out I had landed the part in November and now its February and I still have so much to do! I’m just fortunate enough to get the chance, I feel it is the best West End show of the time; it may not be my era but I was surprised at just how many songs I knew.

Q. Is it daunting to have the lead role as Frankie?

A. It is going to be great. I think I am kind of getting used to the idea now, but it never gets any easier, my nerves never go.

Q. What about Frankie as a character? As the Jersey Boys were known for being on the wrong side of the tracks until their rise to stardom as one of the most successful bands in pop music, how did you get a feel for the role?

A. Our backgrounds are so different, but I went to New York and got a real feel for it. People forget that the Jersey Boys are real people, Frankie is still performing today – all he really cares about is performing. He is an intense, dark character, and so driven. But this is, I guess, to his detriment in the show as everything in his life comes second to his career.

Q. You’re alternating the role with award-winning Ryan Molloy, how does that work out?

A. We work out a schedule every eight weeks and it changes all the time, sometimes I do more shows a week and then sometimes he does. I’m absolutely made-up with how things are going so far – I’m looking forward to getting started.

Ryan Jesse, Gilbert Native Makes Broadway Debut in Jersey Boys

The lights of Broadway are shining on former Chandler-Gilbert Community College student and Gilbert native Ryan Jesse. Jesse, 25, recently made his Broadway debut in the role of Bob Gaudio in “Jersey Boys,” the award-winning musical.

Ryan Jesse says he feels blessed to be performing on Broadway only three years after completing his musical theater degree from the University of Northern Colorado. “It’s great and it’s amazing to be where I never thought possible,” Jesse said. “To be at a place in my life where my childhood dreams are realized is incredible, and it’s an honor to get to do this every night.”

Jesse’s love for the stage was further ignited when he first set foot in the local junior high school’s drama classroom, which was filled with props and set pieces.

“I thought to myself, ‘There can’t be anything in the world more exciting and fun than this. If there’s any possible way people would pay you to do this, why would anybody want to do anything else?’ ”

Jesse’s parents, CGCC dance Professor Sally Jesse and theater Professor Gordon Jesse, are thrilled with their son’s success but say they keep him grounded by reminding him of the capriciousness of the business and encouraging him to continue working on his craft.

Jesse is taking the advice of his parents and cast mates to heart.

“Many of my fellow cast members tell me that you only do this once in your life, so take your time and enjoy it. I keep reminding myself of that,” Jesse said. “And with a show that’s as good as this, you know people are going to like it, so you just need to do your job and have fun. That’s what I’m doing, and I’m having a great, great time.”

Jersey Boys opened on Broadway to critical acclaim in November 2005, is the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons – blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks who became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time.
