Jersey Boys Forrest Theatre Review

Jersey Boys at the Forrest Theatre Just Too Good To be True

This jukebox musical has all the elements of tell a story, sing a song over and over. If you can endure the first 40 minutes of the boys finding the right song, the right name, the bail money then you will enjoy the great music they eventually offer. The supposed real life story while well told is more like flash speed episodes of Goodfellas or the Sopranos, excessive profanity included. The songs, while very impressive rarely apply to the scenes. If you’re okay with this you may see why so many people flock to this show; to hear them sing and sing they do! By far the best ingredient of Jersey Boys success is the music.

The Jersey Boys Philadelphia cast includes Matt Bailey (Tommy DeVito), Joseph Leo Bwarie (Frankie Valli), Steve Gouveia (Nick Massi) and Quinn VanAntwerp (Bob Gaudio). Bwarie’s voice and falsetto is a dead ringer for Valli as he ‘sings like an angel.’ Van Antwerp’s Bob Gaudio is vocally a plus to the quartet, however Gouveia’s Nick Massi’s leave a lot to be desired both vocally is a bit understated in his role. Matt Bailey plays a colorful and probably the most authentic “Italian” among the group. Together they wail out winners such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” and “Working My Way Back to You.” Bwarie captures the crowd with “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

The sets are minimal, functional, industrial and dreary while pop art comic, campy images appear in a failed attempt to compliment the songs. The money scene is the staging when the band sings “Dawn” as the group turns their back and the audience is giving the band’s eye view; golden lights blasting, cameras flashing. This is what fame looks and feels like for four young hoods from Jersey.

Jersey Boys at Forrest Theatre through Dec 12

Jersey Boys at Forrest Theatre through Dec. 12, follows the highs and lows of the band from the group’s founding to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.

Quinn VanAntwerp, Joseph Leo Bwarie, Matt Bailey, Steve Gouveia and the company of Jersey Boys

Jersey Boys is fantastically directed by Des McAnuff, who also directed the show on Broadway, with book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe. The story is broken into four sections, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, and each band member narrates a season, adding his own spin to the events. Tommy DiVito, the band’s founding member and initial driving force, takes the first section. Tommy details how he, his brother Nick, and friend Nick Massi, were trying to make it as a threesome with little luck. Then Tommy discovered teenager Frankie Castelluccio, a boy with a “voice of an angel.” Tommy decides to bring Frankie into the fold, Nick Massi mentors him, and Frankie changes his name from Castelluccio to Valli. When Nick DiVito lands in prison for an extended visit, the group is forced to find a replacement. With the help of Joe Pesci, yes that Joe Pesci, the guys are introduced to song writer Bob Guadio. Despite reluctance from Tommy, Frankie invites Bob to join the group and history is made when Bob writes the band’s first hit, “Sherry.” Fame,

This fast-paced, dynamic show is full of action, drama and humor. A tremendous cast supports lively music that has the audience clapping and singing along. Joseph Leo Bwarie is excellent as Frankie Valli. With The Four Season’s large repertoire of hits and 33 songs in the production, the music has to be good. And it is. Jersey Boys is a show not to miss.

Jersey Boys runs at the Forrest Theatre, 1114 Walnut Street,
Philadelphia, PA 19107, through Dec. 12. Show times are Tuesday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6:30 p.m. Matinees are Saturdays at 2 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. There will be no performances on Thursday, Nov. 25 or Sunday, Nov. 28 and Dec. 12.

Another Review for Jersey Boys in Philadelphia

Another rave review for the Jersey Boys national tour in Philadelphia.

“”
You’ll have a good time. My hand to God. My lips should fall off my face if I’m telling you wrong. Jersey Boys, which has been touring the world, winning prizes (Tony, Grammy, Olivier) wherever it goes, is the story of guys who grew up in a tough Italian neighborhood in New Jersey and became the Four Seasons. It’s like a singing Sopranos, with a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, lyrics by Bob Crewe, and directed by Des McAnuff.

Frankie Valli (Joseph Leo Bwarie) is just a teenager with a killer falsetto and melting eyes when he finds his local guy-mentor, mobbed-up Tommy DeVito (Matt Bailey – why, oh, why, am I still falling for the sexy bad boys?). What with one street-corner singer or another going to prison, it’s hard to keep a group together. But eventually, with the addition of Nick Massi (Steve Gouveia) and the songwriter Bob Gaudio (Quinn VanAntwerp), the Four Seasons rock to the top of the charts and, eventually, the Hall of Fame.

The cast members, who can act as well as sing, are also sound-alikes/look-alikes for people who remember the originals. Besides the four, Joseph Siravo, as both the mob boss and a smarmy record producer, is terrific, and a slew of capable others play multiple roles in a show that never lags.

The set is mostly just a stage with a catwalk and some movable furniture, but the wit in Klara Zieglerova’s design lies in the huge Roy Lichtenstein paintings that loom over the stage, illustrating and commenting on the action onstage.

‘Jersey Boys’ dazzles in Philly debut

Steve Gouveia, Matt Bailey, Joseph Leo Bwarie and Ryan Jesse star as The Four Seasons in 'Jersey Boys,' a musical about the 1960s hitmakers now at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia

Steve Gouveia, Matt Bailey, Joseph Leo Bwarie and Ryan Jesse star as The Four Seasons in 'Jersey Boys,' a musical about the 1960s hitmakers now at the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia

“Jersey Boys,” now electrifying audiences at Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre, is an extraordinarily polished production. From its opening moments, this musical about 1960s crooner Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons dazzles and delights with its engaging, incredibly talented cast, its complex staging, its visual detail and its non-stop energy.

Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff and Tony Award-winning choregrapher Sergio Trujillo have put together a show that is full of rocking music, graceful dance steps, engrossing visual details, neon overhead lighting effects and heart.

This musical bio is complex, full of drama, and oh yes, melodrama. Marshall Brickman’s and Rick Elice’s book not only tells the rags to riches rise to musical stardom of the Jersey Boys, but they have captured the uniqueness of Jersey. Brickman and Elice have an uncanny ear for the language, speech patterns and the far-too- many four letter words which punctuate their blue collar/Mafia-influenced conversation.

And then there is the music — 27 classic hits, including “Sherry,” “Oh What a Night,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Rag Doll” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” But what makes this music even more spectacular is the arrangements. Each song is first sung simply and then the arrangement is gussied up with show biz razzle dazzle until it becomes a fully orchestrated extravaganza.
