Broadway Hit Musical Jersey Boys at Proctors Theatre – Review

Jersey Boys musical is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. YNN Staff recently caught up with the current tour at Proctors Theater in Schenectady.

“We’ve been on the road together now for three months and it’s just a solid company of people on and off the stage. That’s what makes it great,” said Colby Fotik, who plays Tommy DeVito.

This jukebox musical is certainly a feast for the eyes and ears. There are more than 400 conventual lighting units and a full sound system including 120 speakers. It’s just as much production backstage as it is on.

“The band, the amazing wardrobe department, the dressers that keep us doing quick changes, sometimes within 15 seconds, you know, the crew, lights, sound, everyone…it’s a huge effort behind the scenes to hopefully make us look as good as we’d like to think we look,” said Brad Weinstock, who is cast as Frankie Valli.

The story follows the forming, rise, and eventual break-up of the Four Seasons. Each act was actually separated into four seasons. And since this is based on a real band, there was a source of material to draw from.

“The first week was just basically the four of us in a room learning how to become this band, our version of this band,” said Jason Kappus, who plays Bob Gaudio.

And when portraying Frankie Valli, you certainly need a falsetto voice. It could come from natural talent, rehearsals, or something called “Frankie Camp.”

Cast members said Frankie Valli himself made an appearance during rehearsal one day.

“That was kind of a moment but he was really gracious and sweet, came around shook everyone’s hand, obviously was very much behind the show and excited about what we are doing,” said Weinstock. So if you’re into the nostalgic sounds of “Rag Doll” and “Walk Like a Man,”.

Jersey Boys Musical Coming to Proctors Theatre February 28, 2012

Sunday Macrh 4th and 18th – 2:00 PM Show only
Sunday Macrh 11 – 7:30 PM Show only

It will be the first time the show about the ’60s singing group Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons will be brought to this market, but it will mark a return visit for Colby Foytik, who plays one of the singers in the legendary group.

Foytik plays Tommy DeVito, the man who formed The Four Seasons and recruited Valli to be its lead singer. In a recent interview, Foytik revealed he is very familiar with this area. Not only did he go to Ithaca College, but he performed in “Forever Plaid” at Cohoes Music Hall about seven years ago. The actor spent 10 months with the show in Las Vegas.

“I don’t remember much about the area,” he said. “It was in January and very cold and very snowy. When we weren’t at the theater, we stayed in our apartment.” He said that during the three-week “Jersey Boys” run, he intends to make up for that and hopes to visit many Capital District landmarks before the show leaves town March 18.

It would seem that “Forever Plaid,” a musical about four dead guys who never made it in show business, and “Jersey Boys,” a show about one of the most popular singing groups ever, are worlds apart. Foytik agrees the content of the shows is dramatically different, but, he points out, they have two huge things in common: a four-part harmony and music people love.

“I bet the majority of the people who go to ‘Jersey Boys’ will know and love 98 of the songs,” Foytik said, offering titles like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Dawn” and “My Eyes Adored You” to prove his point.

Jersey Boys Musical is the story of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they were thirty.
