Jersey Boys National Tour Opens in Memphis

According to Jonathan Devin, musical bad boys make good in The Orpheum Theatre’s season anchor touring production, “Jersey Boys,” which opens Wednesday. The high-flying, biographical musical brings with it a slew of former No. 1 hit songs and a handful of Tony Awards to boot.

The musical narrates the rise to fame of 1960s singers Frankie Valli, Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio and Nick Massi, who as the Four Seasons, created such resonating hits as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and “Walk Like a Man” using their signature sharp-edged falsetto vocal style.

“There are a couple of serious ballads in the show, but basically the Four Seasons was a fun group,” said Orpheum Executive Director Pat Halloran. “It was dance music. Their music was very entertaining. They were the antithesis of what the late ’50s and ’60s were.”

While audiences will recognize most of the songs in the show, Halloran said the story is lesser known.

“(Audiences are) only learning it now because a lot of people have seen the show in other cities,” he said.

“There’s no question about it, this is what people want to see right now,” Halloran said. “Even people in their 30s will remember these songs. It’s just a great show that people will enjoy.”

Jersey Boys Receives Helen Hayes Award Nomination for Outstanding Non-Resident Production

The Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award winning hit musical, JERSEY BOYS just received a 2010 Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Non-Resident Production. The Helen Hayes Awards are Washington DC’s most prestigious theatre awards and a vibrant living legacy to The First Lady of the American Theatre. The Awards ceremony will take place April 5.

The National tour of Jersey Boys played a successful run at the National Theatre in Washington, DC from October 2, 2009 through December 12, 2009. Jersey Boys will next play Memphis at the Orpheum Theatre from January 27 through February 14, 2010.

Jersey Boys is the winner of the 2006 Best Musical Tony Award®, the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

Directed by two-time Tony Award® winner Des McAnuff, Jersey Boys is written by Academy Award-winner Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe and choreography by Sergio Trujillo.

Jersey Boys opened at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway to critical acclaim on November 6, 2005. The Jersey Boys National Tour opened to rave reviews in San Francisco on December 1, 2006, played a record-breaking run in Los Angeles and is still breaking house records in cities across North America. There are six Current Productions of Jersey Boys: New York, London, Las Vegas, Toronto, a US National tour, and Melbourne, Australia.

Jersey Boys is the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons: Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi. It’s a journey of how a group of blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. They wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide – all before they were thirty.

The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Jersey Boys was produced by Bob Gaudio, and was recently certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The cast recording is now available on Rhino Records. Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons (Broadway Books) is the official handbook to the smash Broadway hit.

Jersey Boys Heads to Memphis January 27!

JERSEY BOYS opens a three-week run in Memphis on Wednesday, January 27th. Davis spoke with Orpheum CEO Pat Holloran about the music of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and the Tony Award-winning show that will be playing at his theatre later this month.

According to Halloran, “I’m old enough to remember making out to the Four Seasons in the back of my ‘49 DeSoto.” Halloran has seen the show four times already, and, according to him, it’s not your typical jukebox musical.

“This isn’t Mamma Mia! or All Shook Up. It’s an adult-oriented show,” Halloran says. “This is about four guys who grew up on the rough and tumble side of New Jersey. It’s real. The show’s creators wanted to be honest, so the characters aren’t saying ’shucks’ and ‘heck.’ They’re using authentic Jersey boys language.”

Jersey Boys Star Leone to Play The Metropolitan Room

Category: Uncategorized — admin @ 2:52 am

John Leone, who recently played Nick Massi in the Tony-winning musical Jersey Boys, will make his Metropolitan Room debut Jan. 31.

Leone’s 4 PM show is titled Songs My Father Loved. The afternoon, which is produced by Lynn DiMenna’s M Lynn Enterprises, will feature direction by Dann Fink. Leone will be backed by The David Brunetti Trio.
“The fast paced homage to some of the iconic male voices of the 20th century,” according to press notes, “celebrates Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Vic Damone, and Jerry Vale, among others. All share Leone’s Italian-American heritage, but it is the influence these singers had on Leone’s father and his cronies at their local social club, the Sons of Italy, that affected Leone most. Here is where he launched his show business career – first as a singing busboy, and later as ‘the lodge’s’ house wedding band singer.”

Leone has also appeared on Broadway in Les Miserables and in the national tour of Titanic.

Jersey Boys The Musical Still Going Strong

Winner of four 2006 Tony Awards including Best Musical is Jersey Boys. The show which opened to rave reviews from critic’s and audiences alike continues to pack them in eight times a week at the August Wilson Theatre. Unlike most people I had no desire to see the show when it first opened. Too much hype as far as I was concerned. In fact it wasn’t until almost two years later when I gave in and went to the show. Well much to my surprise not only did I enjoy it but I would put it right up there with one of the best shows I have ever seen on Broadway. Now for those of you who think you have to be a fan of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons to enjoy the show you don’t. Although it sure doesn’t hurt. The truth is it’s a great show. In fact most of the people who call to order tickets have already seen the show multiple times. See I told you it was popular. Tickets are on sale thru September 2010. Get your tickets to see Jersey Boys The Musical on Broadway. It one of the best shows around.
