PostHeaderIcon Jersey Boys coming to San Antonio in September

Jersey Boys is visiting San Antonio, TX September 2010 for three week run. From Sept. 8-26, “Jersey Boys” will be at Majestic Theatre in San Antonio. The Tony award-winning musical, “Jersey Boys,” tells the true life story of how Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons went from being blue-collar kids singing on street corners to one of the most successful acts in pop music history.

The show features songs that helped get the group into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You,” “Walk Like A Man” and “Dawn”. The show also delves into the harmonious and sometimes disharmonious relationships among the group’s members.

Divided into four seasons, the show gives each member of the group, Valli, Tommy DeVito, Nick Massi and Bob Gaudio, a chance to tell their story of how they rose to fame and how, sometimes, success doesn’t always equal happiness.

This year’s BBC Proms in the Park on 11 September with feature performances from Oliver! star Kerry Ellis and Queen guitarist Brian May.

Songs from hit West End musicals Jersey Boys and Oliver! are to feature in this year’s BBC Proms in the Park, it has been revealed.

Kerry Ellis, who plays Nancy in Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, will take to the stage in Hyde Park on September 11th 2010 with Queen guitarist Brian May in order to add a theatrical twist to the annual classical music event.

Meanwhile, the cast of Jersey Boys will kick off the afternoon’s events after being introduced by BBC Radio 2’s Ken Bruce, WhatsonStage.com reports.

After all of the entertainment has been enjoyed in the park, a big screen will link up with the Royal Albert Hall in order to hold a nationwide sing-along for the Last Night of the Proms.

PostHeaderIcon Jersey Boys’ Millionth Customer

one millionth customer

Aubrey Dan, left, president of Dancap Productions, surprises Amanda Sant, 21, from Innisfil, Ont., with the news she will go to New York to see Jersey Boys on Broadway. Sant was the millionth customer at the Toronto production of Jersey Boys on Wednesday, July 23, 2010.

The Innisfil woman was surprised Wednesday afternoon to be told she was the millionth customer to attend Jersey Boys, the hit musical presented by Dancap Productions at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

Sant, who is five months pregnant, took her mother to the matinee and was rewarded with a prize of an all-expense-paid trip to New York, including a night at Jersey Boys on Broadway, where the show opened in 2005.

For almost two years, the musical saga of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons has played to large and enthusiastic audiences in Toronto, just as it has done in other cities across North America since its first tryout in La Jolla, Calif., in 2004.

When the show’s Toronto presenter, Aubrey Dan, announced he was opening the show at a theatre north of Yonge St. and Sheppard Ave., downtown skeptics doubted it could succeed. But the GTA has changed and, as Dan puts it, “what used to be perceived as the north of the city is now the heart of the city.”

When the show opened on Aug. 24, 2008, Dan said he “never dreamed it would reach its millionth customer . . . but that doesn’t make it any less thrilling.”

Dan said the success of Jersey Boys has also given him courage to continue in his battle to be considered as a major presenter of commercial theatre in Toronto. He has struggled to get venues and some of his attempts have failed, such as last fall’s show The Toxic Avenger.

“I’m committed to staying with this effort,” Dan said. “In fact, I’m more involved than I ever have been before. My organization has its finger on the pulse of Toronto, but we’re also close to what’s happening in New York and London.”

Dan is one of the producers of Memphis, which won this season’s Tony Award for Best Musical, evidence that the quirky, slouch-hatted impresario is not to be written off as a major player on the city’s scene.

As for the lucky Sant, her prize trip will be her first ever to Manhattan, and a memory she’ll never forget.

PostHeaderIcon Jersey Boys Is Gripping in Indianapolis

Critic Jay Harvey states that You don’t have to have a memory bank stuffed with Four Seasons songs to have plenty to draw upon at “Jersey Boys.”

Here’s Jay Harvey’s rave review:

It’s a gripping piece of theater that can connect with anyone who’s experienced work-life issues, even though they’re probably not set to hit songs. Like so many American stories, it reminds us that however much we try to nurture the goose that lays golden eggs, it’s all too tempting to wring its neck.

As the Broadway Across America Indianapolis touring production moved toward its second weekend here Wednesday night, “Jersey Boys” appeared to be in fine shape, despite a few vagaries of amplification and balance.

The set strikes the eye immediately, steely and squared off, looking almost as if it could serve as the setting for the rumble in “West Side Story.” A giant cage moves into and out of position, making vivid the subtle contrast between the illusory freedom of show business and the entrapped lives of lower-middle-class Italian-Americans.

The glamour that beckoned the Four Seasons (and seems to be snatched out of their grasp every which way) is as two-dimensional as the old-school comic-strip knockoffs that pop up on screens above the stage to introduce each “season” in the group’s career.

Jersey Boys – Prince Edward Theatre, London

Thousands of people visit London every year and take in a theatre show, but what’s worth seeing? In the heart of London’s theatre land there are literally dozens of theatres within a few hundred metres of each other showing a whole host of shows. Many opted for Jersey Boys, a show based on the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

Although the Burton Mail critic is not from the era of The Four Seasons and probably couldn’t tell you the title of any of their tracks until he saw Jersey Boys, he became a fan thanks to the clever and gripping story, the fabulous music, and the superb cast. Here’s a preview:

It’s true that the writers of the show Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice came up against this problem time and time again with the four key players Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and the late Nick Massi all having differing accounts of key events in the group’s history.

This is cleverly overcome by more than one version of events being played out at the same time and with some of the onstage arguments showing that everything was not always plain sailing. The story is truly gripping with the music playing a key role. To see the band struggle as they are forced to sing backing vocals to their manager’s (Bob Crewe) artists before a hastily put together arrangement of Sherry was sung down the telephone to kick-start what was to become a super-group.
