Jersey Boys touring production offers a strong, fluid staging by Des McAnuff and choreographer Sergio Trujillo, with outstanding performances–and memorable vocalizing–by the four young actors playing the world-renown quartet: Joseph Leo Bwarie as the diminutive dynamo with a remarkable vocal range, Franki, Preston Truman Boyd as the steady, talented composer Bob Gaudio, John Gardiner as the hyper, anxious and troubled Tommy DeVito and Michael Lomenda as the laconic Nick Massi.
All the great hits are here, richly sung by the cast and backed with top-notch arrangements, including “Walk Like a Man,” “My Eyes Adored You,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Sherry” “Stay,” “Bye Bye Babie,” “C’mon Marianne,” “Who Loves You,” and “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” to name just a few.
Outstanding and exciting as the music is, “Jersey Boys” is no mere jukebox musical. One of its frequently overlooked strengths is its book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (currently represented on Broadway by “The Addams Family.” They tell the story, warts and all, of how the group that would ultimately take the name “The Four Seasons” from a local bowling alley initially came together in suburban New Jersey in the late 1950’s following various failed attempts by DeVito and Valley (as Franki spelled his name at that point) to eke out a living in clubs and lounges.

Jersey Boys tells the rags-to-riches story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, who overcame tremendous odds to make it big in the early days of rock and roll. On Thursday night, four actors who have starred in various productions of Jersey Boys hit the stage at the Jubilee Auditorium to give invited guests a taste of the production. Along with the musical interlude, there was a Q&A session with the actors, some yummy appetizers and a brief talk from Aubrey Dan, founder of Dancap Productions. Aubrey and his wife Marla (who is from Alberta) have also left their marks on the country as philanthropists, donating more than $20 million to a variety of health and education charities. It was great to hear the passion in Aubrey’s voice Thursday night, as he talked about his desire to bring more theatre offerings to Canadians. That passion led Aubrey to start Dancap Productions in 2007, which resulted in a successful two-year run of Jersey Boys in Toronto (along with a variety of other plays along the way.) Now, he’s taking the show on the road and that means Calgary will host a touring production of Jersey Boys next summer. Info on the Calgary show and tickets.

Jersey Boys is playing now through October 16, 2011 at the Wharton Center Cobb Great Hall on the campus of Michigan State University. “Jersey Boys,” which won a Tony and a Grammy in 2006, tells the true story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
The musical plays out a lot like a live version of VH1’s “Behind the Music.” While some audience members might come in prepared only to have fun — which “Jersey Boys” certainly delivers on — there is the surprising aspect of an interesting history lesson. Included in that history lesson are appearances by many of good ole Jersey folks who played a role in the Four Season’s success — including the now-famous actor Joe Pesci, who the audience learns introduced Bob Gaudio to Tommy DeVito back in the day, solidifying the original Four Seasons group.
Jersey Boys has lots of heart and personality. This kind of show could not succeed without great talent on the stage. And Jersey Boys has it. The four stars (Joseph Leo Bwarie, Michael Lomenda, Preston Truman Boyd, and Matt Bailey) actually sing much better than the originals (revealing my age here). The quartet is tight, crisp and amazingly in tune.
Especially impressive is Joseph Leo Bwarie who plays Valli himself. His voice is so clean, so crystal clear that he makes hitting the high notes in Four Season hits like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and so many others, seem effortless.
No additional songs were added, so the only music we hear are the ones we know so well (“Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and more). The show is propelled as much by the intriguing story as it is by the spectacular singing of those gotta love ’em songs.
