Jersey Boys Musical at the Jubilee Auditorium – Review
Jersey Boys national tour is currently performing at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and continue through Sunday July 15, 2012. The review of Jersey Boys musical by Louis Hobson at Calgary Sun is presented below:
It’s a big, brassy, crowd-pleaser of a musical about the rags-to-riches story of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi who, as The Four Seasons, were the chart-topping sensation of the 1960s.
From the nightly standing ovations this musical is receiving at the Jubilee Auditorium, their music is every bit as infectious today as it was when it first made history.
The moment Joseph Leo Bwarie (Valli), Preston Truman Boyd (Gaudio), John Gardiner (DeVito) and Michael Lomenda (Massi) belt out such Four Seasons anthems as Sherry, Walk Like a Man and Big Girls Don’t Cry, you can feel the electric charge that surges through the audience.
It takes almost 40 minutes of the first act for this to happen because it took years for DeVito, Valli and Massi to find Gaudio, who was to write the songs that exploited Valli’s incredible falsetto.
Before that they covered other people’s music, but once Gaudio joined the group, the magic happened for The Four Seasons, as it does again for Jersey Boys.
As far as this Jersey Boys goes, Boyd brings as much magic and electricity to the show as Gaudio brought to the music. He is a mesmerizing quadruple threat of a performer who can act, sing, dance and play keyboard. He gives Jersey Boys the boost it needs and his part of the storyline brings some genuine tension and pathos to the musical.
Then there’s Bwarie. Without a ticking time bomb of a performer like Bwarie you simply can’t have a Jersey Boys. Valli had a distinctive sound and an amazing falsetto and Bwarie goes beyond just replicating it. He doesn’t just sing from his diaphragm and voice box. Bwarie’s sound comes from his heart and soul.
Jersey Boys works a bit like a concert inside a musical. When the quartet sings The Four Seasons’ hits and the audience goes wild, it’s near impossible to tell whether Bwarie, Boyd, Gardiner and Lomenda are accepting the applause as their characters or themselves. Either way, it is a love affair between performers and audience.
Jersey Boys is not the kind of musical you analyze. You just sit back and revel in its flash, glitz and pulsating energy.

Jersey Boys Returns to Winspear Opera House – Review
Jersey Boys returns to the Winspear Opera House in the current tour and will perform through July 15, 2012. Here is the glimpse of the Musical review by Cheryl Callon at Theaterjones.com
Receiving and quite deserving of the rave reviews around the world, Jersey Boys divulges the tumultuous path of The Four Seasons. The music, of course, is phenomenal; one doesn’t become a Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame legend by merely having a great smile. The subtle genius of the production, however, comes from the book. Instead of going the traditional route of a solidly linear storyline where the action solely conveys the plot, writers Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice opt for using point-of-view and making the fourth wall a little more transparent.
Each of the four main characters narrates a section, all of which are named after (appropriately) the seasons, and gives his perspective on the events. And it’s not just a typical monologue where the performer stares at the exit sign in the back and delivers his lines. They each intimately address the audience, inviting the crowd to join them on the journey through the smoky lounges of Jersey to major recording studios to performing in front of cameras for a national audience.
Bob Gaudio (Jason Kappus) picks up the story for the second part “Summer,” as the trio checks him out for their fourth member. While the action moves pretty quickly during the group’s struggle to find identity, the subsequent hits which shoot them to stardom then the bombshell of Tommy’s debt that ends the act, Bob’s calmer, methodical thought process shows through, creating an even feel compared to the previous section.
The musical ends with the original Four Seasons being inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and performing together on stage. Each gets his time to do a “Where Are They Now?” segment (like they do in movies with subtitles) and reflect on the impact and greatness of the band.

Jersey Boys Playing at Tulsa Performing Arts Center – Review
Jersey Boys is currently playing on first national tour in Tulsa, OK for a three-week run through June 24, 2012.
Here is the glimpse of the Musical review by James D. Watts Jr at tulsaworld.com
There is a lot more reason why “Jersey Boys,” which opened a three-week run Wednesday at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, has become such a phenomenon.
That last course is the one Tommy’s been pursuing without too much success, until he finds a kid who “sings like an angel” named Francis Castelluccio — who soon changes his name to Frankie Valli (Joseph Leo Bwarie). Once Nick Massi (Michael Lomenda), a bass guitar-playing man of few words, gets out of prison, he joins DeVito and Valli in the group. But it isn’t until the trio is introduced to a songwriter named Bob Gaudio (Preston Truman Boyd) that all the pieces come together for what will become the Four Seasons.
Des McAnuff staged the action with all the kinetic energy of a Martin Scorsese gangster movie, with scenes changing with cinematic speed and fluidity. The book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice compresses a good 40 years of history into a fast-moving, often sharply funny, and surprisingly rich story that gives each main character a “season” in which to tell his version of the story. And while Brickman and Elice may have taken a few liberties with the facts, as Tommy DeVito says, “You ask four guys how it happened, you get four different versions.”
The four guys telling those stories in this production are top-notch. I’ve heard other actors in the role of Frankie Valli who do a more exact job of recreating Valli’s distinctive falsetto, but I haven’t seen anyone give a more deeply felt, more finely nuanced performance than Bwarie, whether it’s as the wide-eyed young Frankie at the start or a grieving father at the end.
He’s also the most physically active Frankie, dropping into the splits in some of the dance moments. And Bwarie’s singing has great energy and passion, especially in the second act, when each performance is Frankie Valli basically singing to save his life — for example, in a bravura performance of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” where all the desperation turns into triumph.
Gardiner is just about perfect as DeVito — a tight, compact bundle of single-minded ambition and potential violence, the sort of guy who always talks about getting out of “the neighborhood” but can never leave it behind. He delivers DeVito’s wiseguy patter so naturally you would think Gardiner had just stepped off the red-eye from Newark.
Boyd has a singing voice about as strong and wide-ranging as Bwarie’s, as he demonstrates in “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night).” And he has a fine sense of comic timing makes his delivery of Gaudio’s droll one-liners crackle with dry wit. And Boyd projects so confident a presence that, even when Gaudio begins to move out of the spotlight, Boyd continues to make him fascinating to watch. Lomenda makes the most of Massi’s relatively few lines, so that just about everything he says comes as a surprise, like his hilarious outburst about DeVito’s personal habits in the midst of a tense scene involving a couple of mobsters.
