Jersey Boys Musical outselling the music in Sydney
Jersey Boys, which opened last weekend, broke box-office records this week at the Theatre Royal
Business is booming in the performing arts with record numbers of tickets sold for all the big summer shows. While music festival punters are being cautious, with no NSW summer festival selling out yet, musicals are luring record numbers.
“Over the past five to six years our audiences have doubled for musicals in Australia,” said super-producer John Frost of the Gordon Frost Organisation.
Jersey Boys, which opened last weekend, broke box-office records this week at the Theatre Royal, Sydney Australia selling more tickets than any other show in the theatre’s 34-year history, beating mega-musicals The Phantom Of The Opera, Cats and Les Miserables.
Tickets to the show, which traces the history of The Four Seasons and features many of the band’s hit songs, cost up to $165. The three-week season of the Australian Ballet’s The Nutcracker, which opens at the Sydney Opera House on December 3, is almost a sell-out.

Jersey Boys Sydney Australia Cast
Look at the pictures of Australian actors who play The Four Seasons–Bobby Fox (Frankie Valli), Scott Johnson (Tommy DeVito), Stephen Mahy (Bob Gaudio), and Glaston Toft (Nick Massi).
Beyond being a feast of the Four Seasons’ hits and a compressed journey through their lives, Jersey Boys celebrates the Italianism of Valli (Bobby Fox), Tommy DeVito (Scott Johnson), Bob Gaudio (Stephen Mahy) and Nick Massi (Glaston Toft): the tribal loyalty, the mob connections and the genetic, God-given ability to sing.
The cast’s sterling efforts are amplified by the expert creative team that realised the original Broadway production, including the director Des McAnuff, choreographer Sergio Trujillo and set designer Klara Zieglerova. A band under Luke Hunter provides sure accompaniment.

Jersey Boys Opened in Sydney Theatre Royal
Jersey Boys officially opened in Sydney on Saturday at Theatre Royal. Check out a sneak peek of John Shand’s rave review in the Sydney Morning Herald:
“This is easily the best jukebox musical ever. Yes, best in a dismal field, but immediately setting it apart is a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice that fizzes with snappy dialogue and bullying one-liners. It creates credible characters for not only the four leads but also a supporting cast led by Daniel Scott’s Bob Crewe (the band’s shrewd, amusing lyricist/producer) and Lisa Adam as Valli’s wife, Mary, whose sharp tongue cannot prevent a slide into disillusionment.
The show is defined by its singing. Fox’s remarkably Valli-like falsetto creates truly thrilling moments in the harmonies (Rag Doll being a notable example), and the many Gaudio/Crewe-penned hits such as Big Girls Don’t Cry and Walk Like a Man explode from the stage with verve, polish and conviction.”
